In a big step for India’s space technology sector, Ahmedabad-based startup SatLeo Labs has raised $3.3 million in its pre-seed funding round. The company is developing advanced thermal imaging satellites to capture data from space that can be used in areas like agriculture, urban planning, climate monitoring, and defense.
The funding round was led by Merak Ventures and supported by Huddle Ventures, GVFL, Java Capital, IIMA Ventures, PointOne Capital, and angel investors Manish Gandhi and Dheer Baldua.
Founded in 2023 by Shravan Bhati (CEO) and Ranendu Ghosh (CTO), SatLeo Labs is building technology that goes beyond traditional satellite imagery. Their key innovation is a dual-band system that combines thermal (heat) and visible light images, allowing users to detect early signs of issues like crop failures, wildfires, and heat stress in cities.
“With rising temperatures, early detection is more important than ever. Our technology can help prevent billion-dollar losses by giving decision-makers the right data at the right time,” said Shravan Bhati.
The funds will be used to:
- Develop their thermal imaging payload
- Complete feasibility studies
- Get regulatory approvals
- Hire more talent
- Strengthen their space-tech infrastructure
What sets SatLeo apart is not just its innovation but also the interest it’s already generating. The startup has received over $25 million in Letters of Intent from potential clients. Their team includes experienced professionals and former ISRO scientists, and they are actively working in collaboration with ISRO and IN-SPACe.
“We believe SatLeo can unlock the power of thermal imaging in a way the world hasn’t seen yet,” said Sheetal Bahl, Partner at Merak Ventures. “They are solving real problems with space data, and that’s the kind of impact we’re excited to support.”
As the demand for Earth observation and climate-related solutions continues to grow globally, SatLeo Labs is positioning itself as a key player—not just in India, but on the world stage.
