KIA Receives Prestigious Green Airports Recognition Award for 2024

Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has earned the silver award at the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Green Airports Recognition (GAR) 2024. This accolade places KIA among the best in the category for airports handling between 15 million and 35 million passengers annually.

ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East has announced the GAR 2024 results, celebrating 12 airports in the region for their exceptional sustainability projects. This year’s theme focused on ‘Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions.’

Airports were invited to showcase their best practices in preserving biodiversity and implementing nature-based solutions. Submissions included efforts such as carbon-reducing plantations, marine life conservation, wetland rejuvenation, horticulture and nursery projects, and wildlife management for safe operations.

Awards were given in three levels – platinum, gold, and silver – across four airport size categories: over 35 million passengers, between 15 million and 35 million passengers, between 8 million and 15 million passengers, and less than 8 million passengers annually.

In the 15 million to 35 million passengers category, the platinum award went to Japan’s Kansai Airport, while Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport took the gold.

Other Indian winners included Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, which received a silver award in the over 35 million passengers category, and Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, which also won silver in the less than 8 million passengers category.

Stefano Baronci, Director-General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, praised the submissions, stating, “The diverse range of projects from marine life conservation to wetland restoration and carbon removal efforts showcase these airports’ commitment to environmental stewardship. Their innovative approaches are exemplary for the aviation industry. Congratulations to all the recognized airports. We look forward to continuing our work towards a sustainable future for aviation.”
